The B.I.S. degree from my understanding is a somewhat new type of degree offered by Arizona State University throught
the University College. B.I.S. stands for Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. What does this mean? Many people wander this
when I tell them what my major is. The B.I.S. degree allows for students to choose two concentrations of which they are interested
in, and they learn to integrate the two. In my case I chose Business and Spanish. I have taken all the same classes I
would have had to take if I was minoring in the two subjects.
The core clases we take, BIS 301, 302, 401, and 402.
All help us to explore our concentrations. BIS 301 and 302 both helped us
by expanding our creativity and helping us understand what exactly interdisciplinary means and how to integrate our concentrations.
For the BIS 401 class we had to do an applied study with a company or "internships" my particular
internship was with AmeriFirst Financial, where I learned work with Spanish speaking clients in the
mortgage business. BIS 402 is the last class we had to take, here we continued to learn to go outside
the box and learn more about ourselves and our potential.
